The question I get asked the most – hands down – is “What do you think about First Look’s? We can’t decide if we want to do one or not!” My brides ask me this question a lot! And I love this question because it’s an exciting topic for me. After photographing 40+ weddings, I’ve experienced the serenity and passion that my couples have in those moments during their First Look. I’ve seen the anxiety lifted off their shoulders the moment they lock eyes and the comfort they provide in each other arms.
Most couples become so conflicted when trying to decide if they want to see each other before their ceremony. It’s important to remember that your wedding day is ALL about you and your man. This is YOUR special day, the one day you’ll never forget. There are no rules for what you can and cannot do on your wedding day. Traditionally, the groom does not see his bride until the moment her father walks her down the aisle. That’s how it’s always been – BUT its not a “rule”.
Whether you choose to see each other before the ceremony or not, you will be absolutely joyful.
If you’re here, wanting to know if you should do a First Look, here is why I think you should consider it!
About 80% of my couples decide they want to do a First Look after I tell them this.
- It’s a weight lifted off your shoulders
- No one is watching – you can have a private moment!
- It’s the only alone time you’ll get
- You can cry! (There will be time to touch up your make-up!)
The moment you wake up on your wedding day you will probably have anxiety – come on lets be honest, you are going to be SO excited but so anxious at the same time. This is the best day of your life and you can hardly wait to see your soon to be husband. You will spend all morning getting ready to look breathtakingly beautiful just so you can see the look on his face when you walk up. And girl, you know it will literally take you ALL morning and afternoon to get ready. I’m talking 5 hours at least!
You know the stress and the excitement will linger until the moment you are in his arms. Doing a first look allows you spend that quality time together before all eyes are on you! Imagine walking up behind him and softly hugging him the moment he turns around. Imagine the weight lifted off your shoulders. He’s your other half, your soulmate, your best friend. It’s like time stops and it’s just the two of you in that moment.
The best part is that no one is watching you, you can relax. All of your friends and family will be there shortly, to celebrate your love for each other. So this moment is just for the both of you to cherish.
You wedding day will be full of celebration with everyone you love from the ceremony to the reception. This First look will be the only time you two get alone. These 20 minutes you’ll spend privately together will truly be something special- you won’t regret it.
You may be thinking, “What if I cry! My makeup will be ruined before the ceremony!” Let me say, this may be the best reason to do a first look… you can actually cry because you’ll have plenty of time afterwards to touch up your makeup! If you don’t do a first look, you may find yourself frantically asking your maid of honor at the ceremony, to hurry and find your touch up makeup before pictures. The truth is, you can totally cry during your first look and you won’t have to worry about having time to fix your makeup!
These are all reasons the really consider doing a first look at your wedding! Photographers LOVE first looks because this is a really sweet moment to capture for the bride and groom. The only other time the photographer can steal you away for pictures is for a short time after the ceremony and often times it can be rushed. I really believe that you and your fiancé should spend that quality time together without being rushed!
So there you have it! I hope you consider doing a first look for your wedding!
